How many of you listen to podcasts? I absolutely love listening to podcasts while I’m feeding my son or driving long distances. I know many of you enjoy listening to podcasts and gaining the knowledge from experts you love.

But perhaps you’re wondering how does one get on a podcast as a guest? Many podcasts invite guests to be on their show and maybe you have envisioned yourself as a guest, but you have no idea on how to actually get onto the podcast!

Having been on multiple podcasts myself, I am going to share with you how I get onto podcasts as a guest and how you can too! This is all part of your visibility plan and it’s one way to begin establishing yourself as the thought leader in your field and generate new leads from it.

What is a Podcast?

According to Google, a Podcast is “a digital audio file made available on the Internet for downloading to a computer or mobile device, typically available as a series, new installments of which can be received by subscribers automatically.” Or in layman terms, a digital audio file of a talk show where the host discusses niche topics to his/her audience that is available for downloading.

Why would I want to be on a Podcast?

When you’re on a podcast, you are automatically seen as the expert in your field. You get to share your expertise and your knowledge with people you want to reach but haven’t yet. You are getting in front of a totally new audience for them to experience you in a new way.

Being on a podcast shows that you’re a thought leader in your field and that you have something worthy to say, no matter if you’re brand new to your business or you’re an established brand. People listen to guests on podcasts because if they trust the talk show host, then they will automatically trust you.

After you get done sharing, you can mention any news or lead magnets that you have so the host’s audience can get on your email list and learn more from you. It’s also a good way to see if your lead magnet is what people want so you can go back and tweak it if necessary.

Plus being on a podcast is so much fun!

What will this do for your business?

  1. Build credibility to your name.
  2. Gives you prestige.
  3.  Separation from your competition.
  4. Show that you’re a thought leader in your field.
  5. Showcases that you’re not afraid to get out there and people admire that about you.
  6. A podcast logo on your business can bring in more interest – thus leading to more business.
  7. You look more serious about your messaging and your business than others.
  8. You can show others how to get onto podcasts now that you have connections.

Great! Where do I find Podcasts to get onto?

Google.

Google is a great place to start! This is where I start researching anything – whether it’s for online magazines to write for or blogs to guest post for – it’s my go-to place to begin digging. I would recommend looking up “call for podcast guest + [your industry]” or “podcasts for [your industry]” to see if the podcast is a match for your target audience and if they allow guests to come on.

Facebook.

How could we forget the power of Facebook? I have found podcasts to be on through making a post on my personal wall asking friends if they knew of any podcasts I could be on. I’ve gone to Facebook Groups and asked if anyone is looking for guests to have on their podcasts. I always look for podcasts on Facebook Groups too because people will post if they are looking for guests or not for their podcasts.

iTunes.

Browse through iTunes to find podcasts to be on. Then look for the new podcasts list to see if they are accepting guests.

My Advice: Look for the pocasts that have an actual website. I wouldn’t be on a podcast unless they have a website for it. It makes it look more legit and that they have a following (regardless if they do or not).

Pinterest.

Pinterest is the second largest search engine next to Google, so dig around on Pinterest to see what you can find. I’m sure there’s a few bloggers out there that promote guests on their podcasts or gives out information on specific podcasts that allow guests on their shows.

How do I approach a Podcast Host?

Some podcast will have a form on their website that you can fill out and submit to the host to consider you. And here’s a piece of advice I have said in the past and I will say again because it’s THAT important!

My advice: ALWAYS read their guidelines carefully! And then respect them.

I have also emailed podcast hosts to ask if they are looking for guests. I usually present them with who I am and what I do. Then I go into what I enjoy talking about and the area of expertise I am in and how I believe that would be of interest to their audience.

Tip: Make your email about THEM and THEIR podcast rather than about you!

Then it’s a waiting game to hear back from them. And it’s okay to email them a week later if you haven’t heard from the host to follow up.

What happens next?

The host will decide whether or not to have you on their podcast and hopefully, they will say, “You’re amazing, let’s schedule a time to get you on the podcast!” Usually, they will send you a link to schedule a time to do the recording and will ask for your bio, website and other things to include on the shownotes.

Then you’ll have the recording, which is generally through Skype, and they will let you know when it’ll come out so you can promote it to your audience as well!

Now you’ve been on a podcast! You can now include that in your speeches, website, and more to let new audiences know where you’ve been featured at!

That’s how you gain visibility by being a guest on a Podcast!

Podcasting is one of my favorite ways to spread my knowledge and expertise to new audiences, so I hope you not only enjoyed this article, but you take the time to research and get onto a podcast yourself!
